A graduate of BITS Pilani, Lohith is currently a Software Developer at Phillips in their Healthcare Tech division. He interned with a few start-ups where he discovered his passion for technology, and in this session, he shared his experiences, how he sees the world of technology and what the future holds for software developers. Here are a few takeaways from the session:
Q: Should you work for a service or a product-based company?
Lohith: It's essential to know what aligns with your strengths. Product-based companies typically has new challenges almost everyday, require you to think outside the box, and have a creative and inventive work style! Service-based companies prioritize customer satisfaction, have better defined working hours and a stable work environment. Think deeply about what you enjoy and the kind of career you wish to pursue.
Q: What sustains an application made for a billion users?
Lohith: We all know how massive Netflix is, but have we ever considered how it is able to serve masses across the globe? Knowing how to create an application in a variety of methods opens up a plethora of career opportunities. Microservices architecture (MSA) is one of many methodologies that are progressively displacing other development methodologies. MSA's significance in the future of the software industry is something that none of us can overlook.
Q: What does the future hold for health care tech industry?
Lohith: There's a huge adoption that's happening not just in the tech industry but in almost all the industries, and that's cloud computing. The pace at which the disruption is happening in every industry demands better computing capabilities, greater scalability of the application, and more, which cloud computing can provide. At Phillips, the pandemic propelled the transition to cloud computing even more. Before the pandemic, an application was deployed onto clients' servers manually using thumb drives. This was an inefficient process, considering the costs and the space these servers demanded. However, the pandemic has forced companies to rethink how they deploy software, and cloud computing was there to help. You no longer need to purchase enormous servers or allocate significant amounts of space to accommodate them. Everything is done on the cloud, which makes the process more efficient. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There's a lot more that cloud computing can offer.
There has never been a better moment to start a career in the software industry. The number of startups in the IT industry is growing at an exponential rate. The growth of unicorns in India, as well as the ease with which creative brains can be found, has resulted in an all-time high demand for developers.
